Garmisch-Partenkirchen: More than Winter Sports!

Garmisch-Partenkirchen, with 29,875 inhabitants, is located near the Austrian Border in the Oberbayern region of Bavaria, Germany. This town is worldwide recognized as being the place where the annual New Year Ski jumping competition takes place. The most well-known resort in the German Alps was in1936 the host of the fourth Winter Olympics. Both events help Garmisch-Partenkirchen gain the recognition that entices thousands of tourists to choose this town as their tourist destination.

These days, this is a modern town with all the facilities needed to practice winter sports such as skiing, skating, but also during summer, you, especially if you like hiking, can take pleasure in exploring the rocky heights. Even though it is recognized almost exclusively by its winter activities, it is a place worth visiting at any time of the year. You can get there by train, taking first the ICE from Frankfurt to Munich and changing then to the rural train system. Other affordable and easy options are taxi or bus.

The landscape is simply stunning: the magnificence of the Zugspitze, the highest mountain, dominates the scenery. It is a town where culture and history come together to make it even more attractive. The inhabitants of the town still wear traditional clothes: Lederhosen in the case of men and Dirndl for women. The buildings are also part of this perfect picture since their walls are decorated with frescoes that can be even centuries old.

Garmisch’s center is characterized by being full of fashionable cafés and shops. In the park, the Kurhaus contains a collection of historical toys and Meissen porcelain or the Stiftung Aschenbrenner. On the other hand, in the Partenkirchen's center you will find many traditional painted houses with exhibitions that personify the region’s culture. Have fun and enjoy the beauty of art in a paradisiacal place that combines sports, fun, art, history and culture: Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
