Rathenow is a town in the state of Brandenburg, Germany, with a population of 27,085 till 2005. The Protestant church of St. Mary and St. Andrew, originally a basilica, and transformed to the Gothic style in 1517 to 1589, and the Roman Catholic church of St. George, are noteworthy. Rathenow is known for its Rathenow stones, bricks made of the clay of the Havel, and for its spectacles and optical instruments, which are exported.
 
Brandenburg is one of Germany's sixteen Bundeslander. It lies in the east of the country as it is one of the new states created in 1990 upon the reunification of the former West Germany and East Germany. The capital is Potsdam. Brandenburg surrounds but excludes the national capital Berlin. The state of Brandenburg was named after the town of Brandenburg an der Havel.
