Olpe (North Rhine-Westphalia)
Germany is located in Central Europe and it shares borders with Denmark in the North, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and France in the West, Austria and Switzerland in the South and Poland and the Czech Republic in the East. The North Sea and the Baltic Sea represent additional National Borders in the North. The official language of Germany is German and Berlin is the capital.
Germany is divided into 16 states which are further subdivided into 439 districts and cities. Germany is one of the largest European economy and the third largest economy in the world in real terms, placed behind the United States and Japan, and fifth behind the United States, China, India and Japan counted by purchasing power parity.
Olpe is one of the popular destinations in Germany, well known for its beautiful countryside and the quantity of cultural related attractions. It is a town and a municipality in the district of Olpe, in North Rhine-Westphalia. Situated approximately 20 kilometers east of Gummersbach and 20 kilometers north-west of Siegen, Olpe has a total land area of 856 square kilometers and population of 26,231 inhabitants.
According to precious archeological findings, Olpe is said to have taken its name from the confluence of the two streams Olpe and Bigge. The oldest relicts found in excavations in the area of Olpe date back to about 900 AD. These are ruins and slags from early iron smelting at the place of a former settlement, Kimickerberg, and coins found in Dahl from after 1005.
Olpe experiences a very wet climate. Western winds bring clouds which formed over the Atlantic. Before they can pass over Olpe these clouds have to rise. The coldest month is January while July is the warmest month. During winter, fog forms frequently out of the moist air.
Presently, Olpe experiences a boom with day tourists, owing to the clear air, town character with rich culture, high quality of life and conspicuously original history. The picturesque scenery, the majesty of nature, the slow pace of life, and the welcoming nature of its people also combine to make this region one of the most important tourist attractions in Germany.
