Northeim (Lower Saxony)
Germany is located in Central Europe and it shares borders with Denmark in the North, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and France in the West, Austria and Switzerland in the South and Poland and the Czech Republic in the East. The North Sea and the Baltic Sea represent additional National Borders in the North. The official language of Germany is German and Berlin is the capital.
Germany is divided into 16 states which are further subdivided into 439 districts and cities. Germany is one of the largest European economy and the third largest economy in the world in real terms, placed behind the United States and Japan, and fifth behind the United States, China, India and Japan counted by purchasing power parity.
Northeim is one of the popular destinations in Germany, and is well known for its scenery and the quantity of cultural related attractions. It is basically a city in Lower Saxony and an administrative seat of the district of Northeim. It is positioned at an elevation of 126 meters above the sea level and has a total land area of 145 square kilometers. As of the 2004 census, the city listed a population of 31,000 inhabitants and population density of 214 inhabitants per square kilometer.
Northeim was first mentioned in the 800 century during which in a document recording a property transfer by a Frankish nobleman to the Abbey of Fulda. In the 10th century the surrounding region became a county, administered by the Counts of Northeim. The first of them, Siegfried of Northeim is mentioned in the 982 century. From 1061 to 1070, Count Otto II of Northeim held the duchy of Bavaria as Imperial fief, but lost it again because of an alleged involvement in a murder plot against the king. In 1252, Northeim obtained city rights, and from 1384 to 1554 it was a member of the Hanseatic League.
Presently, Northeim experiences a boom with day tourists, owing to the clear air, town character with rich culture, high quality of life and conspicuously original history. The picturesque scenery, the majesty of nature, the slow pace of life, and the welcoming nature of its people also combine to make this region one of the most important tourist attractions in Germany.
