Stadt Wehlen is a town in the Sachsische Schweiz district, a district or Kreis in the south of the Free State of Saxony, the tenth-largest in area and sixth-largest in population among Germany's sixteen states. Sachsische Schweiz’s neighboring districts are, from west clockwise, Weisseritzkreis, the district-free city Dresden and the districts Kamenz and Bautzen and to the south it borders the Czech Republic.
 
Stadt Wehlen is situated on the western edge of Saxon Switzerland, a mountainous climbing area and national park near the cultural and technological center of Dresden in the Free State of Saxony, on the right bank of the Elbe, one of the major waterways of Central Europe originating in the North West Czech Republic before traversing much of Germany and finally flowing into the North Sea. Stadt Wehlen is located 6 kilometers east of Pirna, a city in the Free State of Saxony and 23 kilometers southeast of Dresden proper, the capital city of the German Federal Free State of Saxony situated in a valley on the River Elbe.
 
As of 2005, Stadt Wehlen had a population of 1,724 residents residing within an area of 10.81 square kilometers and had a population density of 160 residents per square kilometer. It lies situated at an elevation of 220 meters above sea level.

Tourism in Germany has expanded since the end of World War II, and many tourists visit Germany to experience a sense of European history. The countryside exhibits a pastoral aura, while its cities exhibit both a modern and classical feel.
