Sonnewalde is a town in the Elbe-Elster district, in southwestern Brandenburg, Germany. It is situated 8 km northwest of Finsterwalde. Brandenburg is one of Germany's sixteen federal states. It lies in the east of the country as it is one of the new states created in 1990 upon the reunification of the former West Germany and East Germany. The capital is Potsdam. Brandenburg is bordered by Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in the north, Poland in the east, the Free State of Saxony in the south, Saxony-Anhalt in the west, and Lower Saxony in the northwest.

Tourism in Germany has expanded since the end of World War II, and many tourists visit Germany to experience a sense of European history. The countryside exhibits a pastoral aura, while its cities exhibit both a modern and classical feel.
