Schmolln is one of the popular destinations in Germany, well known for its beautiful countryside and the quantity of cultural related attractions. It is a town in Thuringia and stretches over a total land area of 41.59 square kilometers. The population of the city was 12,770 in the year 2005 and its population density was 307 inhabitants per square kilometer.
 
Schmolln is located at a connection of Bundesautobahn 4 and has a train station on the Middle Germany Link. In 1066, Schmolln was first mentioned in writing as Abbatia Zmulna. On March 8, 1994, Weibbach was incorporated into Schmolln, and on January 1, 1996, Grobstobnitz followed. Today, Schmolln is divided into 13 districts such as Bohra, Brandrubel, Grobstobnitz, Kleinmuckern, Kummer, Nitzschka, Nodenitzsch, Papiermuhle, Schlobig, Selka, Sommeritz, Weibbach and Zschernitzsch.

Presently, Schmolln experiences a boom with day tourists, owing to the clear air, town character with rich culture, high quality of life and conspicuously original history. The picturesque scenery, the majesty of nature, the slow pace of life, and the welcoming nature of its people also combine to make this region one of the most important tourist attractions in Germany.
