Germany is located in Central Europe and it shares borders with Denmark in the North, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and France in the West, Austria and Switzerland in the South and Poland and the Czech Republic in the East. Schauenstein is a town in the district of Hof, in Bavaria, Germany. It is situated 13 kilometers west of Hof. The free state of Bavaria, with an area of 70,553 square kilometers and 12.4 million inhabitants, forms the southernmost state of today's Germany. Its capital is Munich. The region north of the Alps was inhabited by Celts and was part of the Roman Empire until tribes from the east, the so-called Bayuvaren started to settle in the region in the 6th century. A later mention was made by the Franks. Saint Boniface completed the people's conversion to Christianity in the early 8th century. Bavaria withstood the protestant reformation, and even today is strongly Roman Catholic.
Bavaria shares international borders with Austria and the Czech Republic as well as with Switzerland. Its neighbouring states within Germany are Baden-Wurttemberg, Hesse, Thuringia and Saxony. Two major rivers flow through the state, the Danube and the Main. The Bavarian Alps define the border with Austria, and within the range is the highest peak in Germany, the Zugspitze. The major cities in Bavaria are Munich, Nuremberg, Augsburg, Regensburg, Wurzburg, Ingolstadt, Furth and Erlangen.
