Germany is divided into 16 states which are further subdivided into 439 districts and cities. Germany is one of the largest European economy and the third largest economy in the world in real terms, placed behind the United States and Japan, and fifth behind the United States, China, India and Japan counted by purchasing power parity.
 
Kehl is a municipality in southwestern Germany in the Ortenaukreis, Baden Wurttemberg. It is situated at the river Rhine, directly opposite to Strasbourg. The population of the city Kehl was 34,303 in the year 2005 with the area of 75.06 square kilometers. The village of Kehl was first mentioned 1038.
 
In 1338 the first permanent bridge between Kehl and Strasbourg was completed. In 1678 the city was taken over by France and being considered as a part of the defense system of Strasbourg. Hence the village was transformed into a fortress in 1683 by the French architect Vauban. After the Battle of France, Kehl was turned into a suburb of Strasbourg. This state continued until 1953 when the city was returned to the Federal Republic of Germany.
