Heiligenstadt was first mentioned in 973. In 1227, the town received town rights from the archbishop of Mainz. In 1540 Heiligenstadt became the capital of Eichsfeld. Heilbad Heiligenstadt is a Thuringian town in the Eichsfeld. It is near three-state corners of Thuringia, Hesse and Lower Saxony. As a recognized spa town it offers cures based on brine. The Free State of Thuringia lies in central Germany and is among the smaller of the country's sixteen Bundeslander federal states, being eleventh in size with an area of 16,200 square kilometers and twelfth most populous with 2.45 million inhabitants.
