Gau-Algesheim is a town and a municipality in the district Mainz-Bingen, which is in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, one of 16 Bundeslander or federal states of Germany. It is situated near the river Rhine, one of the longest and most important rivers in Europe at 1,320 kilometers or 820 miles, with an average discharge of more than 2,000 cubic meters per second, and approximately 20 kilometers west of Mainz. Gau-Algesheim is also the seat of the Verbandsgemeinde or collective municipality of Gau-Algesheim, which consists of the Ortsgemeinden or local municipalities of Appenheim, Bubenheim, Engelstadt, Gau-Algesheim, Nieder-Hilbersheim, Ober-Hilbersheim, Ockenheim and Schwabenheim.
