Esens is a town in the district of Wittmund located in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is positioned near the North Sea coast, roughly 14 kilometers northwest of Wittmund and 20 kilometers northeast of Aurich. Esens is also the seat of the Samtgemeinde which is collective municipality. It also consists of several municipalities like Dunum, Holtgast, Moorweg, Neuharlingersiel Stedesdorf and Werdum.
 
Lower Saxony in German known as Niedersachsen lies in north-western Germany and is second in area and fourth in population amongst the country's sixteen Lander that is federal states of Germany. In rural areas Low German is still spoken, but the number of speakers is on its last legs. It has area of 47,618 square kilometers and nearly eight million inhabitants.
