Muhlhausen is a city located in the federal state Thuringia, Germany. It is the capital of the Unstrut-Hainich district, and lies along the river Unstrut. The city had 37,895 inhabitants as per the 2003 census. Muhlhausen was first mentioned in 967 as an Ottonian Pfalz village. It had its period of glory for the period between the 13th through the 15th century. In St. Marien church the radical Reformer Thomas Muntzer preached in 1525.
 
The city of Muhlhausen consists of five districts that include Muhlhausen having 33,660 inhabitants, Felchta having 990 inhabitants, Gormar having 1,109 inhabitants, Saalfeld having 211 inhabitants and Windeberg having 260 inhabitants.
