Luneburg

Germany is located in Central Europe and it shares borders with Denmark in the North, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and France in the West, Austria and Switzerland in the South and Poland and the Czech Republic in the East. The North Sea and the Baltic Sea represent additional National Borders in the North. The official language of Germany is German and Berlin is the capital. The climate is quite pleasant with almost all variety of seasonal flavors as temperate, marine, cool, cloudy, wet winters and summers, occasional warm, tropical foehn wind and high relative humidity. Germany is divided into 16 states which are further subdivided into 439 districts and cities.

Luneburg is a city in Lower Saxony, which is situated in Germany, about 50 kilometers southeast of Hamburg. It is the capital of the district of Luneburg. The city has Population of around 70,312 in the year 2005. In the discovered history, the ancient town is probably to be identified with Leufana or Leuphana, a town listed in Ptolemy 2.10. In medieval times, the town was remarkably rich due to the salt trade. There were several salterns surrounding the town. Along the Old Salt Route, it was transported via Lauenburg to Lubeck and from there shipped to all the Baltic coasts.

Luneburg was first mentioned in 956. After a long time of prosperity its importance declined after 1600. The saline was closed in 1980, and the mining of salt was stopped after a thousand years. The town gained new relevance by its university, which was founded in 1989. The deforestation of the surrounding area for the salt production created the landscape of the Luneburg Heath. The Ilmenau River, a tributary of the Elbe, flows through Luneburg. The infamous Nazi, Heinrich Himmler, committed suicide in Luneburg after he had been captured by the British Army by swallowing a potassium cyanide capsule before his interrogation could begin. Luneburg is twinned with Scunthorpe, England.

Luneburg, justifiably so, enjoys a very positive reputation with worldwide travelers, and is one of the most visited place. It is also said the place of best geographical environment and can trace its origin back to prehistoric times.
