Remscheid

Remscheid is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is located on the northern edge of the region called Bergisches Land, south of the Ruhr area. The population as of 2005 was 116,263 with a density of 1,558 per square kilometer. The city has an area of 74.6 square kilometers. Remscheid was founded in the 12th century, but remained a small village until the 19th century. The economic growth of the entire Rhine-Ruhr region led to an increase of the population of Remscheid. Mechanical engineering and tool-making were the main industrial branches of the town.
 
The main sights in the city include the Mungstener Brucke which is a railroad bridge crossing a valley and connecting Remscheid with the neighbor town of Solingen and the Eschbachtalsperre, the first dam built in Germany for drinking water supply is located here.
 
Remscheid, justifiably so, enjoys a very positive reputation with worldwide travelers, and is one of the most visited place. It is also said the place of best geographical environment and can trace its origin back to prehistoric times.
