Ravensburg is a town in Upper Swabia in Southern Germany, capital of the district of Ravensburg, Baden-Wurttemberg. Its population was 49,129 in 2005 with population density 534 per square kilometers and its area is 92.04 per square kilometers. Ravensburg was first mentioned in 1088. In the middle ages, it was an Imperial Free City and an important trading centre. The town's most popular festival is the Rutenfest in summer.
 
Ravensburg was first mentioned in a written document 1088. Founded by the Welfen, a Frankish dynasty in Swabia which became later on Dukes of Bavaria and Saxonia, they made the castle of Ravensburg their ancestral seat. Ravensburg became first a Bavarian exclave in Wurttemberg. After a swap of estates between Bavaria and Wurttemberg it was incorporated in the Kingdom of Wurttemberg in 1810. Ravensburg is today a thriving shopping town in the wealthy region of Upper Swabia. The nearest large cities are Munich, Stuttgart and Zurich etc.
 
Ravensburg is located at a crossing of the federal roads B30, B31 and B32. A by-pass highway around Ravensburg and Weingarten was completed recently. The regional airport is situated at Friedrichshafen, about 15 kilometers southern of Ravensburg. Ravensburger AG, whose headquarters are located in the town, is a company internationally known for board games and jigsaw puzzles. Ravensburg is part of an urban agglomeration that also comprises Weingarten and several suburbs. Ravensburg, Weingarten, and Friedrichshafen share the functionality of an Oberzentrum. As it is often regarded as among the most beautiful parts of Germany, it is one of the most visited places amongst the most die-hard travelers the world over.
