Gottingen




Germany is located in Central Europe and it shares borders with Denmark in the North, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and France in the West, Austria and Switzerland in the South and Poland and the Czech Republic in the East. Gottingen is a city located in Lower Saxony in Germany and is the capital of the district of Gottingen with Leine River running through it. In 2004, its population was recorded at 129,466 inhabitants. The beginning of Gottingen lay in a village called Gutingi, which was mentioned in a document in year, 953. It was founded between 1150 and 1200 to the north-west area of this village and assumed its name. In the medieval era, it was a member of the Hanseatic League and a wealthy town. Presently, Gottingen is well known for its old university that was started in 1737 and became the most visited university of Europe. In 1837, seven professors protested against the sovereignty of the kings of Hanover but lost their offices.
 
The well known professors in Gottingen included few of the celebrities like the Brothers Grimm, Wilhelm Weber and Georg Gervinus. Even German chancellors like Otto von Bismarck and Gerhard Schroder studied in law school at Gottingen University. Amongst the most famous mathematicians in history, Carl Friedrich Gauss, Bernhard Riemann, and David Hilbert were professors. Economically, Gottingen is renowned for its manufacture of optical and fine mechanical machinery, which includes the light microscopy division of Carl Zeiss.
