Fulda is a city in Hessen, Germany, which is situated on the Fulda River. It is the administrative seat of the Fulda district in Kreis. The Benedictine monastery of Fulda was founded in 744 by Saint Sturm, who was a disciple of Saint Boniface. He was one of Boniface's outposts in the reformation of the church in Germany. He was also a missionary who escorted Charlemagne's armies in their political and military campaign to destroy heathen Saxony. The preliminary grant for the abbey was signed by Carloman, the son of Charles Martel. The support of the Mayors of the Palace and the early Pippinid and Carolingian rulers was important to his victory.

Fulda, from its establishment on the abbey and its area was supported by the imperial grant and therefore was subject to the German emperor. The Abbots ruled it and the nearby villages till they were forcibly dissolved by Napoleon's minions in 1802. Fulda also lends its name to the Fulda Gap, a conventional east-west invasion route used by Napoleon and others. The old German border passed through east Fulda and Soviet and East German forces were positioned in it. Any war between NATO, North Atlantic Treaty Organization and Soviet forces was figured to include an invasion. The American Army were stationed on the 14th and the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment.
