Germany is divided into 16 states which are further subdivided into 439 districts and cities. Germany is one of the largest European economy and the third largest economy in the world in real terms, placed behind the United States and Japan, and fifth behind the United States, China, India and Japan counted by purchasing power parity.
 
Freiburg im Breisgau is a city in Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany, in the Breisgau region, on the western edge of the southern Black Forest having about 214,000 inhabitants. The city has a sunny microclimate and it is the warmest and sunniest city in Germany. It straddles the Dreisam river, on the foothills of the Schlossberg. The city is also surrounded by the Black Forest Mountains Bromberg and Rosskopf in the east, and in the south and west by the Tuniberg, Schonberg and the Kaiserstuhl. The city’s population was 214,716 in 2005, area is 153.06 square kilometers, population density is 1,402 per square kilometers and is elevated at 278 meters.
 
The city was founded in the 12th century by Duke Konrad of Zahringen as a free market town. It was intentionally situated on a junction of trade routes between the Mediterranean and the North Sea, and the Rhine and the Danube rivers. The city is a hub for regional tourism. The longest cable car in Germany runs from Gunterstal up to a close by mountain called Schauinsland.
 
A city known for its historic myths and traditions, scenic beauty, luxurious hotels and cottages, Freiburg is one of the favorite holiday destinations for most of the vacation lovers.
