Cottbus




Germany is located in Central Europe and it shares borders with Denmark in the North, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and France in the West, Austria and Switzerland in the South and Poland and the Czech Republic in the East. The North Sea and the Baltic Sea represent additional National Borders in the North. The official language of Germany is German and Berlin is the capital. The climate is quite pleasant with almost all variety of seasonal flavors as temperate, marine, cool, cloudy, wet winters and summers, occasional warm, tropical foehn wind and high relative humidity. Germany is divided into 16 states which are further subdivided into 439 districts and cities.
 
Cottbus is a city located in Brandenburg, Germany. It is situated 125 kilometers on the southeast of Berlin on the Spree River. As per 30 June, 2004, it had a population of 107,075 inhabitants. It is the cultural centre of the Lower Sorbian minority and is a bilingual city. There is a Lower Sorbian medium Gymnasium, but it is rarely spoken on the streets. It was established in the 10th century, when Sorbs built a castle on a sandy island in the Spree River. It was first revealed in 1156 and in the 13th century, German settlers came in it and afterwards lived together alongside with the Sorbs. In the medieval period, it was famous for its wool, and its drapery was exported to Brandenburg, Bohemia and Saxony.
 
In 1462, Cottbus was acquired by the Electors of Brandenburg who ruled the Duchy of Prussia in 1618. In 1815, the nearby districts of Upper and Lower Lusatia were surrendered by the Kingdom of Saxony to the Kingdom of Prussia and was ruled from Brandenburg. From 1949 till German Reunification in 1990, it belonged to the German Democratic Republic. It homes the Brandenburg Technical University. Max-Steenbeck-Gymnasium is one of Germany's best schools internationally in Cottbus.
