Traunstein is a town in the south-eastern part of Bavaria, Germany and is the administrative center of a district by the same name. It is located at the heart of a region called Chiemgau, roughly 11 kilometers east of Lake Chiemsee between Munich and Salzburg, 15 kilometers north of the Alps, and 30 kilometers west of Salzburg.
The city has a population of roughly 18,000 inhabitants. The town's most well-known inhabitant is the current Pope, Benedict XVI, who attended the priest's seminary here prior to moving to Munich for his university studies. The city’s population was 18,351 as per 2005, area is 48.53 square kilometers, population density is 375 per square kilometers and is elevated at 591 meters.
