Preetz is a town in the district of Plon, in Schleswig Holstein, Northern Germany. Preetz has today a population of 15,600 inhabitants. Schleswig Holstein is the northernmost of the 16 Bundeslander in Germany. The former English name was Sleswick Holsatia, the Danish name is Slesvig Holsten, the Low German name is Sleswig Holsteen, and the North Frisian name is Slaswik Holstiinj. The first mention of Preetz dates from the year 1185, when Ecbrecht Procensis writes about the location Poretz in the Versus de Vicelino. The origins of the name Preetz are said to be found in the Slavic term po rece that is on the river.
