Oberwiesenthal is a town and a ski resort in the district of Annaberg, in the free state of Saxony, Germany. It is situated in the Ore Mountains, on the border with the Czech Republic, 19 kilometers south of Annaberg-Buchholz, and 23 kilometers northeast of Karlovy Vary.
The free state of Saxony is a federal state of Germany. It has a land area of 18,413 square kilometers and a population of 4.3 million. It is the tenth largest in area and sixth largest in population among Germany's sixteen states. Saxony has a long history as a duchy, and eventually as a kingdom. Its monarchy was overthrown in 1918 and a republican form of government was established under its current name subsequent to Germany's defeat in World War I. Abolished during communist rule, it was re-established in 1990 after the re-unification of the nation-state of Germany from east and West Germany.
Oberwiesenthal, justifiably so, enjoys a very positive reputation with worldwide travelers, and is one of the most visited place. It is also said the place of best geographical environment and can trace its origins back to prehistoric times.
