Its neighboring districts are, from north clockwise, Heilbronn, Schwabisch Hall, Ostalbkreis, Bopping, Esslingen, the district-free city Stuttgart and the district Ludwigsburg.
 
Murrhardt is located 12 kilometers east of Backnang, a town in Germany, in the Bundesland of Baden-Wurttemberg, formerly the kingdom of Wurttemberg, roughly 30 kilometers northeast of Stuttgart and 18 kilometers southwest of Schwabisch Hall, a town in the German state of Baden-Wurttemberg, it is the capital of the district of Schwabisch Hall.
