Schmallenberg is one of the popular destinations in Germany, well known for its beautiful countryside and the quantity of cultural related attractions. It is a town in North Rhine Westphalia state and lies in the middle of the Sauerland. The town possesses a total land area of 302 square kilometers with a population of 26,516 inhabitants and population density of 396 inhabitants per square kilometer as of 2005 census.
 
North Rhine-Westphalia, where the town of Schmallenberg lies, is the largest federal state of Germany in terms of population and economic output. The state comprises a land area of 34,083 square kilometers and has over 18 million inhabitants that contributes about 22 percent of Germany's gross domestic product. North Rhine-Westphalia shares its borders with Belgium and the Netherlands.

Schmallenberg boasts many traces of its colonial past and enjoys peaceful lifestyle sheltered from the accelerated pace of the large cities. Even though the town meant the partial loss of its tourist profile due to urbanization, some features of its past times of splendor still remain, with hotels and hostelries that are swarmed by thousands of visitors each year.
