Schluchtern is a town in the Main-Kinzig district, which is in state Hesse, situated in Germany, about 30 kilometers southwest of Fulda. It is positioned on the river Kinzig at the southwest of a hill called Landrucken. By A66 Frankfurt am Main Fulda and the Kinzigtalbahn Kinzig-valley rail Hanau Fulda it is connected to the Rhein-Main-Gebiet.  The city had a population of 17,728 in 2005, its area is 113,30 square kilometers, population density is 156,65 square kilometers and is elevated at 207 meters.
 
Hesse is a state of Germany with an area of 21,110 square kilometers and just over six million inhabitants. The capital city of Hesse is Wiesbaden Kassel until 1945 whilst its economic centre and largest city is close by Frankfurt am Main and the neighboring Rhine Main Area.
