Schlettau is a town in the district of Annaberg which is in the Free State of Saxony, situated in Germany. It is located in the Ore Mountains, 5 kilometers southwest of Annaberg-Buchholz, and 12 kilometers east of Schwarzenberg. The Free State of Saxony is one of the federal states of Germany. It has a land area of 18,413 square kilometers and a population of 4.3 million inhabitants, the tenth-largest in area and sixth-largest in population amongst Germany's sixteen states.
 
Saxony has a long history as a duchy, and ultimately as a kingdom. Its monarchy was overthrown in 1918 and a republican form of government was established under its present name consequent to Germany's defeat in World War I.
