Schalkau is a town in the district of Sonneberg, in Thuringia, Germany. It is situated 13 kilometers west of Sonneberg, and 15 kilometers north of Coburg. The free state of Thuringia lies in central Germany and is smaller among the country's sixteen federal states, being eleventh in size with an area of 16,200 square kilometers and twelfth most populous with 2.45 million inhabitants. Its capital is Erfurt.
 
The most conspicuous geographical feature of Thuringia is the Thuringian forest, a mountain chain in the southwest. The Werra river separates this mountain chain from the Rhon Mountains, which are partially in Thuringia. The northwest Thuringia includes a small part of the Harz mountains. The eastern part of Thuringia is generally a plain. The Saale river runs through these lowlands from south to north.
