Mugeln is a town in the district of Torgau-Oschatz, in the Free State of Saxony, Germany. It is situated 9 kilometers southwest of Oschatz and 14 kilometers northwest of Dobeln. The Free State of Saxony is a federal state of Germany. It has a land area of 18,413 squared kilometers and a population of 4.3 million inhabitants. Mugeln is the tenth largest area and sixth largest in population among Germany's sixteen states. Saxony has a long history as a duchy and as a kingdom. Its monarchy was overthrown in 1918 and a republican form of government was established under its current name subsequent to Germany's defeat in World War I. It was abolished during communist rule and was re-established in 1990 after the re-unification of the nation of Germany from East and West Germany.
