Lorch is a town in Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis. Rheingau-Taunus is a district in the west of Hesse, located in Germany. It is situated at the mouth of the Wisper and belongs to the Middle Rhine region. It is famous for its wine production. Culturally and politically, the people of Lorch feel that they are part of the Hessian Rheingau, as the township of Lorchhausen is the most northern community of the federal land of Rhineland-Palatinate.
 
In the Middle Ages, Lorch served as the northern cornerstone of Mainz facing towards the Rheingau. Its position at the border was quite unique in the years after the First World War, when Lorch was the capital of the Bottleneck Free State.
