Kranichfeld is a town in the Weimarer Land district, in Thuringia, Germany. It is situated on the river Ilm, 18 kilometers southeast of Erfurt, and 16 kilometers southwest of Weimar. The Free State of Thuringia lies in central Germany and is among the smaller of the country's sixteen federal states, being eleventh in size with an area of 16,200 square kilometers and twelfth most populous with 2.45 million inhabitants. The capital is Erfurt.
