Heringen also known as Heringen/Helme in order to distinguish from Heringen in Hesse, is a town in the district of Nordhausen, in Thuringia, Germany. It is situated on the small river Helme, 8 kilometers southeast of Nordhausen. The free state of Thuringia lies in central Germany and is among the smallest of the country's sixteen Bundeslander that is federal states, being eleventh in size with an area of 16,200 square kilometers and twelfth most populous with 2.45 million inhabitants. The capital of the town is Erfurt. Thuringia borders on the German states of lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Saxony, Bavaria and Hesse.
