Herdecke is a municipality in the district of Ennepe-Ruhr, North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany. It is located south of Dortmund in the Ruhr area and is known as Die Stadt zwischen den ruhrseen. The city is located in the area of the RVR, Regionalverband Ruhr. The average precipitation of the town is between 850 and 900 millimeter and average temperature is around 10.6 degree Celsius. The population between 1939 and 1993 grew at 147.25 percent and it slowly declined after 1993. The municipal reform kept the population over 25,000.

Herdecke is located in the Ardeygebirge, the northwestern part of the Sauerland, between Dortmund in the north and northeast, Hagen in the south, Wetter in the southwest and Witten in the west and northwest. The mountain rocks are made up of carbon, along with quarries and mining sandstone are also found out of which only one is still running today. All of the lakes of the Ruhr are reservoirs. Tourism is popular especially around and on the two Ruhr lakes, Hengsteysee and Harkortsee. There is Bachviertel, the historical part of Herdecke.The suburban city also has a museum, a theatre and a cinema. Due to its many historic events and places it has been one of the favorite destinations of visitors.
