Geretsried is a town in the district Bad Tolz-Wolfratshausen, located in Bavaria, Germany. The town is the most populated town in the district, with 24,177 inhabitants as of recorded on 15th September 1999. Geretsried lies on the Isar River, at 592 meters above sea level. It has an area of 24.65 square kilometers and includes the communities of Gartenberg, Gelting, and Stein.
 
Geretsried was first mentioned in the year 1083 and in the early years it served a little more than a group of farms along the postal route between Munich and Innsbruck. It belonged to the city of Wolfratshausen. In 1937 two munitions factories were built that were Dynamit Aktien Gesellschaft and Deutsche Sprengchemie in the burroughs of what is today Gartenberg and Stein. Towards the end of the war, these factories employed slave and foreign laborers. Today, the remains of storage bunkers, administrative buildings, and other remains are scattered throughout the town.
 
Geretsried is definitely one of the popular tourist attractions in Germany. It is worth paying a visit while touring the country. This place leaves a pleasing and unforgettable memory and justifies the proud cultural tradition of Germany.
