Gebesee is a town in the district of Sommerda, a Kreis or district in the north of Thuringia, Germany. It is situated 18 kilometers northwest of Erfurt near the confluence of the rivers Gera, a river in Thuringia, Germany, tributary of the Unstrut, originating from the Thuringian Forest, west of Ilmenau and Unstrut, a river in Germany, tributary of the Saale, originating from northern Thuringia near Dingelstadt which is west of Kefferhausen in the Eichsfeld area.
 
The Free State of Thuringia lies in central Germany and is among the smaller of the country's sixteen Bundeslander or federal states, being eleventh in size with an area of 16,200 square kilometers and twelfth most populous with 2.45 million inhabitants. The population of the city of Gebesee was 2314 inhabitants as of 2003, living within an area of 24.04 square kilometers it had a population density of 96 inhabitants per square kilometer.
 
Tourism in Germany has expanded since the end of World War II, and many tourists visit Germany to experience a sense of European history. The countryside exhibits a pastoral aura, while its cities exhibit both a modern and classical feel.
