Germany or the Federal Republic of Germany is located in Central Europe with Berlin as its capital city. The German language was once the lingua franca of central, eastern and northern Europe. It is a member state of the United Nations, NATO, North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the G8, Group of 8, and the G4, Group of 4, nations, and is a founding member of the European Union. It is the European Union's most populous and most economically powerful member state. Germany is one of the largest European economies and the third largest economy in the world in real terms.
 
Garching bei Munchen or Garching is a town in Bavaria, the southernmost state of today's Germany near Munich. It is located at 48 degrees15 minutes north and 11 degrees 39 minutes east, situated near the river Isar, the fifth largest river in Bavaria, Germany. After the Inn River and the Lech River, it is the third most important tributary of the Danube River in Germany, and the A9 motorway. A Munich U-Bahn metro line terminates at the university and research facilities near the town. The city had a population of 15,336 residents in 2005, living within an area 28.16 square kilometers with a population density of 548 residents per square kilometer. It is situated at an Elevation of 481 meters above sea level.
 
A number of research and scientific educational institutions are located in Garching, including such as Headquarters of the ESO, European Southern Observatory and DFA, the Federal Research Institute for Food Chemistry, the Max Planck Institutes, the departments of the Technische Universitat Munchen, the physics department of the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitat and the General Electric Global Research Center.
 
Tourism in Germany has expanded since the end of World War II, and many tourists visit Germany to experience a sense of European history. The countryside exhibits a pastoral aura, while its cities exhibit both a modern and classical feel.
