Doberlug-Kirchhain is one of the popular destinations in Germany, and is well known for the quantity of cultural related attractions and monuments that it has embraced. It is a town in the district of Elbe-Elster of Brandenburg. It covers a total land area of 119.25 square kilometers and has a population of 10,425 inhabitants as of 2003 census. The town of Kirchhain was founded by Margrave Gero in 937 century. Later, in 1235, it received the first market-rights. In 1431, the rivals of Margrave, Hussites destroyed the town of and the abbey. In 1637 and 1643 the Swedes destroyed Kirchhain. However, the jurisdictions of Doberlug and Kirchhain were again unified in 1848. The actual merger of the two towns did not take place until over one hundred years later, in 1950.

On August 28, 1992, the Amt Doberlug-Kirchhain was created to streamline the administration of the town together with the surrounding eight small municipalities. The municipalities incorporated into the town were Frankena, Dubrichen, Hennersdorf, Nexdorf, Priessen and Werenzhain and Buchhain.

Presently, Doberlug-Kirchhain experiences a boom with day tourists, owing to the clear air, mountain views, historic monuments, gardens, parks and several other attractions. Because of the high quality of life locally, the population is growing faster than is normal in this part of the country. The industrial development in and around this municipality has been a determining factor for its economic growth and population. Although the industry is losing force in the last decades, the might of the sector services continues attracting new inhabitants in the town.
