Kiel




Germany is located in Central Europe and it shares borders with Denmark in the North, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and France in the West, Austria and Switzerland in the South and Poland and the Czech Republic in the East. The North Sea and the Baltic Sea represent additional National Borders in the North. The official language of Germany is German and Berlin is the capital. The climate is quite pleasant with almost all variety of seasonal flavors as temperate, marine, cool, cloudy, wet winters and summers, occasional warm, tropical foehn wind and high relative humidity.
 
Germany is divided into 16 states which are further subdivided into 439 districts and cities. Germany is one of the largest European economy and the third largest economy in the world in real terms, placed behind the United States and Japan, and fifth behind the United States, China, India and Japan counted by purchasing power parity.
 
Kiel is a municipality in northern Germany and the capital of the Bundesland Schleswig-Holstein. It has a population of 233,795 and located on the Baltic Sea at the head of the Kieler Forde, the city has been one the country's main naval bases since the 1860s. Kiel is a center for German shipbuilders and the eastern terminus of the Kiel Canal. A renowned university, the Christian-Albrechts-Universitat is located in Kiel. Kiel is famous for its sailing events, including the Kieler Woche, one of the biggest sailing events in the world. In 1936 and 1972, when the Olympic Games were held in Berlin and Munich respectively, the Olympic sailing competitions were held in Kiel-Schilksee.
 
Kiel was first initially founded in 1233 as Holstenstadt tom Kyle by Count Adolf IV of Schauenburg, and granted town privileges in 1242 by Adolf's eldest son, Johann I of Schauenburg. In the surrounding area of Kiel are seaside resorts such as Kiel-Strande, Kiel-Schilksee, Moltenort and Laboe. The famous sights in Kiel include The Rathaus, Der Geistkampfer; a sculpture by Ernst Barlach in front of the Nikolaikirche etc. Kiel is an attractive city with natural beauty and historical places, while traveling in Germany.
