Germany is located in Central Europe and it shares borders with Denmark in the North, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and France in the West, Austria and Switzerland in the South and Poland and the Czech Republic in the East. The North Sea and the Baltic Sea represent additional National Borders in the North. The official language of Germany is German and Berlin is the capital. Germany is divided into 16 states which are further subdivided into 439 districts and cities. Germany is one of the largest European economy and the third largest economy in the world in real terms, placed behind the United States and Japan, and fifth behind the United States, China, India and Japan counted by purchasing power parity.
 
Karlsruhe, the city takes its name from Margrave Karl Wilhelm of Baden-Durlach, who founded the city in 1715 after a dispute with the citizens of his previous capital, Durlach. Karlsruhe became the capital of Baden-Durlach until 1771, subsequently the capital of Baden until 1945. Karlsruhe is a municipality in the south west of Germany, in the Bundesland Baden-Wurttemberg, located near the French-German border. In 2005, the population of the city was 283,959 and an area of 173.46 square kilometers.
 
Germany's biggest oil refinery is located in Karlsruhe, at the western edge of the city, directly on the river Rhine. Karlsruhe is known as the internet capital of Germany because two well-known internet service providers are located in the city. The Technologieregion Karlsruhe is a loose union of the region's cities in order to promote high tech industries.
 
Karlsruhe is well known in transport circles around the world for pioneering the concept of operating trams on train tracks, to achieve a more effective and beautiful public transport system. The nearest airport is part of the Baden Airpark about 45 kilometers southwest of Karlsruhe.
