Heinsberg is a town in North Rhine-Westphalia, in terms of population and economic output - the largest Federal State of Germany, capital of the district Heinsberg. It is situated near the border with the Netherlands, on the river Wurm, approximately 20 kilometers north-east of Sittard and 30 kilometer south-west of Moenchengladbach. It lies at an altitude of 76 meters above sea level. As of 2005, it had a population of 41,640 living within an area of 92.14 square kilometers and has a population density of 452 residents per square kilometer.
