The city was first populated during the 788 century and was called as Ediningom in an announcement of the Monastery in Wissembourg in Alsace. Later in 1192, Ettlingen was raised to city status in the German Empire by Heinrich VI one of Friederich Barabarossa's sons. In the following years it became an independent city in the Margravite of Baden-Baden.

Presently, Ettlingen experiences a sharp social, economic and population growth derivative of the strategic position of the locality and the high level of well-being and quality of life that is enjoyed with respect to other places of Germany. This fact has consolidated along with other adjacent municipalities, as a great alternative for residence.
