Erkelenz is an exclusive touristic town located in Rhineland, in the state North Rhine-Westphalia, in the rural district Heinsberg. It is situated in the lowland of the Niederrheinische Bucht. The area is covered by loess and very fertile soil. The landscape is called Borde and is plain.
 
According to the precious archeological findings, Erkelenz was first mentioned in a document as Herclinze in 966 century. In the 1326 century, it received the status as a town from the count of Guelders. Earlier, the area of Erkelenz was an exclave of the duchy of Guelders in the duchy of Julich. The town belonged to the Upper Quarter Roermond. Later, in 1543 century, the Spanish Netherlands got Erkelenz and in 1713 after the war of the Spanish succession, the prince of palatine received the town.
 
Presently, Erkelenz experiences a sharp social, economic and population growth derivative of the strategic position of the locality and the high level of well-being and quality of life that is enjoyed with respect to other places of Germany. This fact has consolidated along with other adjacent municipalities, as a great alternative for residence.
