Cuxhaven is a town in Lower Saxony in Germany. It has around 55,000 inhabitants and is located on the coast of the North Sea at the mouth of the Elbe River. It has a footprint of 14 kilometers from east to west and by 7 kilometers from north to south. It is the capital of the Cuxhaven district and an admired vacation spot on the North Sea. Between 1945 and 1964 a range of experiments in rocketry were performed close to Cuxhaven. On 2, 4 and 14th October in 1945, one rocket of type A4 was launched from a region between Arensch and Sahlenburg to show the V-2 rocket to the Allied military. It was known as Operation Backfire and a layout plan of the starting place of Operation Backfire can be found here.

From 1957 to 1964 in the cotton wool region of Cuxhaven, the German Rocket Society, the Hermann Oberth society, Ernst Mohr and the Berthold Seliger research and development company launched 500 rockets. The smallest of these rockets were used for sea rescue, while the biggest were used as research rockets. The most amazing rockets launched at that period in the tideland of Cuxhaven were the rockets of Ernst Mohr. It reached a maximum altitude of 50 kilometers with a takeoff weight of 150 kilograms.
