Bergisch Gladbach is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, located east of Cologne. As per the 2004 census, its population was estimated at 110,033 inhabitants. Early settlements existed in the 13th century, but the town was officially founded in 1856.
 
The word Bergisch in its name originates from its location in the earldom of Berg and was added to distinguish it from Monchengladbach. In 1975, it was incorporated with the neighboring city of Bensberg and when it reached a population of 100,000 inhabitants in 1977, it received the rank of a city.
 
Bergisch Gladbach is the seat of administration of the Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis. The town has been twinned with Luton in the United Kingdom, since 1956. Its principal industries include paper manufacturing, printing, glassware and textiles. It is said the place of best geographical environment and can trace its origins back to prehistoric times. It enjoys a very positive reputation with worldwide travelers.
